Any good project plan needs to map resources with project goals and objectives. We can make a list of ever increasing demands every single week but unless you are willing to define a minimum required hours of gameplay that will make the requirements achievable it's just going to end up frustrating people.
I understand your point of view, but the top 60% of the guild is getting frustrated at the other 40%. Everyone said they wanted to Node and castle Wars. These are steps entire guild needs to meet, if we are to stand a Chance.
Think of the guild like a business and then go from there. My point is to inject some realism into the mix. What kind of guild are we trying to be? What is the direction from leadership? Are we letting the tail wag the dog? You have human resources. As a business you have goals that you want to achieve (i.e., double profits). In order to do that you need to make sure your employees are capable so you give everyone specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, and timebound objectives. I completely understand wanting to be ready for node and castle wars. But if your boss tells you that you need to get a CISSP and CCNA by next week or you lose your job and you realize that it takes more time than is available in a week to get a CISSP alone, then that is not only a bad boss but a toxic work environment. Objectives need to be SMART or they need to be changed. None of us get paid real money to play this game. People who are sitting at the top in metrics in this guild spend more time playing the game than they do working a job so it's no surprise they are at the top. The same is true of our competition, they work the game more than they work a job. In this game increasing time spent is the only way to accelerate on the power curve and the power curve in this game is not linear. "Catching up" means spending more time a week than the other guys do. If the goals for the guild are going to always assume that members have 40 hours a week to spend in the game then just state that. Don't state ambigous requirements. Don't say you expect people to play 5+ nights a week because that does not translate to hours played. You actually expect them to play X hours per week and X hours per day played in order to meet the requirements that keep increasing and if you are behind you need to spend X+Y or you are going to need to find another place to play. I have heard more than once that we wanted to ride the middle ground between "hardcore" and "casual" as a guild. Let's be realistic. If you really want to compete with hard core guilds, you need to be hardcore. I don't think you're going to be able to have it both ways. I frequently hear people in teamspeak who play 4+ hours a day saying things like "there is no reason everyone in the guild couldn't be fully geared and level 56 in 2 weeks". That may be true if everyone can no-life the game but that's not going to be true for people who have careers and families. I play this game quite a bit (I played 16 hours on Sunday alone) and I can't keep up with the Jones in this guild as it is. Part of this is because I am still learning the game and never played in KR and don't have time to get a degree in BDO. For me to catch up to the top 10% of this guild, I'd have to quit work and that won't pay my mortgage or put food on my real table. I can't be the only person in the guild in that situation. I am not interested in the sister guild. I want to PvP in this game and I feel I have plenty of time to get geared up for when the node and gear wars are actually in the game. But I do feel that we're not being realistic about our goals and the people getting frustrated that are geared likely don't realize just how much time they spend in the game. Edited for clarity.
What kind of guild are we trying to be? We are a semi-hardcore PvX guild that is interested in node wars. We have the lowest requirements of all the guilds in the top 25 rankings. Most people are here to hang out, play games, and see what this game is about. What is the direction from leadership? We have guild meetings almost every Monday. I'm pretty vocal. The original post in this thread is direction from leadership. Are we letting the tail wag the dog? The tail in this case are the people who are not 52 and 230ap/dp. I don't understand. I've never once heard someone saying it takes 2 weeks to fully gear and hit 56, that's absurd. If someone did say it they are just wrong. Never did we say people would be kicked or chastised for not hitting the level and ap/dp. We don't make any demands from anyone besides super low contribution requirements. We set realistic goals that just about everyone should be able to attain and try to give everyone the opportunity to accomplish it. There are constant grind and scroll groups looking for members. If you want to PvP and cant keep up with our super low expectations, this isn't the place for you.
I hope you are not feeling a need to be defensive. I am not attacking. Those were not questions meant to be answered so literally. They were part of a larger stream of thought so please don't lose sight of the forest for the trees. I am pretty sure I already knew the answer to the first two questions. If we are constantly trying to appease a vocal minority who get frustrated that more people are not as well geared as they are, then maybe the tail is wagging the dog. Right now node and castle wars are not part of the game so there is nothing to keep up with regarding PvP, that element doesn't exist yet other than open world deathmatch which has not been a stated goal that I am aware of. So we're trying to get ready for when the objective based PvP is in the game and I completely support that. And I appreciate having a sense of urgency. As long as we are all pulling in the same direction and supporting each other we should all be able to have a good time together. Out of curiosity, the Monday meeting at 9PM conflicts with the time that the Monday group is supposed to be working on guild quests. Is the weekly meeting going to be moved? Or is the expectation that the guild kill quests will happen while the meeting is taking place? As someone in the Monday group, I'm okay with either option.
